Decades in Spain is four-piece rock outfit from right here in beautiful Orlando. They’ve been doing their thing since 2012, and recently released their self-titled EP. Decades in Spain is classified as somewhat alternative, somewhat post-punk. Musically they seem to take influence from that 70’s Joy Division scene, but with a smidgen of Deftones (a modern day comparison could be drawn to Savages).

Throughout the EP, Decades in Spain guitarists Marc Hernandez and Alex Langfur layer their songs with dark and punchy melodic guitar harmonies that remain forever fluid. Different guitar tones are utilized, helping to keep the EP interesting. There are numerous instrumental breaks where the boys showcase their stuff, and although they can be a little daunting, they never come off forced.

Chris Marques (bass, vocals) and Mike “The Sawmill” (drums) form a tight rhythm section, creating a solid canvas for the Hernandez and Langfur to paint all over. This is best demonstrated on “Sixty,” the EP’s opener. The drums on the track are after my heart; I’ve always been a huge fan of fast closed hi-hat. That, paired with a thumping bass line, sends the urgency pouring out my speakers.

The vocals on the song are in a half sung, half spoken style, typical of the sounds influencing Deacades in Spain. Marques’ lyrics are reminiscent of the current emo-revival movement. I’m reviewing the new You Blew It! album right now, and the juxtaposition between the  two band’s lyrics is interesting. On future Decades in Spain releases, I would like to hear some screaming to break up the sometimes lesser interesting vocal melodies.

10/16/13 Bag of tracks: Physic Teens, The Vivid, White Lung

It’s hump day, that middle point of the work week when you feel the weekend is never going to come. I put together a few new tracks to get you through the rest of the week. Enjoy.

Physic Teens- “RIP”

Post-punk three-piece Physic Teens recently released their sophomore album, COME, and “Rip” was the dark and sinister first single. What sticks out the most to me is Larry Ragone’s deep vocals. His voice is like a cross between James Bond and Sweeney Todd, whispering in your ear, telling you ghost stories.

The Vivid- “Riser”

“Riser” is The Vivid’s debut single off their upcoming EP, out later this year. The Vivid describes themselves as, “self-destructively energetic three-piece garage punk band.” These guys are from Melbourne, I’ve been following them for a long time, and can’t wait to hear their EP. “Riser” comes in sweet, but around the 1:00 mark the riffs kick in and there’s nowhere to hide. The chorus pumps the volume even louder, then collapses in on itself. The Vivid have no desire to make tightly stitched together songs, they let it all hang out.

White Lung- “Blow It South”

White Lung’s 2012 debut Sorry blow my brains out, and they haven’t missed a step with “Blow It South”. White Lung is heavy, they’re probably the heaviest band that I really like, sorry metalheads, but the typical metal band doesn’t do it for me. White Lungs has hooks and harsh sounds, they’re really really good. “Blow It South” is one of two new songs being released on vinyl November 5.

Artist Spotlight: Sonic Graffiti

Today is special! I recently received an email from St. Pete three-piece Sonic Graffiti, who thought I might like there stuff. Before I start, let me say thank you to everyone who has been supportive of The Vinyl Warhol so far. It is already doing better than I ever hoped, and I love hearing/reviewing new music from talented musicians. Enough with the emotional intro, I give you Sonic Graffiti. Enjoy.

Friendly Unit Creation Kit

Sonic Graffiti’s music can be described as neo-Zeppelin, barn burning rock n’ roll. Their debut EP, Friendly Unit Creation Kit, was released on June 1, is a gritty collage of rock, punk, rockabilly, and blues. This EP starts off right. “The Morning Electric” is the quintessential Sonic Graffiti song. It describes Sonic Graffiti, at there core, better than I ever could. Their loud, unapologetic, and you better get out of their way. Guitar licks that dance the fine line between  garage blues and heavy metal, and the bass doesn’t stop for a second, the groove alone will give you carpel tunnel. Drew (vocals/guitar) keeps it simple, no chorus here, just a group chant, that reminds me of Japandroids, and a pair of verses. Drew’s voice is reminiscent Rob Tyner of the MC5. On “Head in the Clouds” he shines as a vocalist, the delivery is convincing and the melody sticks.

Sonic Graffiti delivers riff-rock like old pros, but what’s good here is it never feels stale. They’re more aggressive than the bands their sound comes from, which can be highlighted in the sporadic guitar solos. Their long and numerous, but don’t feel at all forced. “Scribbles” is the wildest of all the tracks on Friendly Unit Creation Kit. The vocals are volatile, so much that the outro is cloaked in gristle of a voice about to break. I’ve never seen Sonic Graffiti live, but I’ll be damned if these songs don’t sound better in person.

The fifth track is a surprise. The guitars, drums, and bass are gone. They’re replaced with what I think is mandolin, because their Facebook says Drew plays mandolin, but to me it sounds like ukulele. There’s nothing wrong with a band putting in a slow song. But to go right from “Scribbles” into this, is too much of a change. I prefer garage rock bands to go more of the psychedelic route with their slower songs. Evan an acoustic guitar with a rolling beat would have fit better on Friendly Unit Creation Kit. I can appreciate the risk, but the mandolin/ukulele thing just contrasts too much the vocals.
